The Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry and in particular Prof. Nikolaos S. Thomaidis’s research group has received two awards for best poster presentation from Chemical Engineering Journal during the 18th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST 2023, https://cest.gnest.org/e/cest-2023) which took place in Athens from 30/08/2023 to 02/09/2023.

Holistic investigation of PFAS in pregnant women biological samples

Alirai, R. Gil-Solsona, N. Alygizakis, N. S. Thomaidis, M. Marquès, P. Gago-Ferrero

This presentation is a collaboration between the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Athens and the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research. The authors have investigated the levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in biospecimens gathered from pregnant women (placenta, urine, blood serum). The results of the study indicated multiple exposures to non-regulated PFAS. This presentation is important as it provides new information on PFAS exposure during pregnancy.

Unveiling the occurrence of organic micropollutants in different species of terrestrial mesocarnivores utilizing HRMS techniques

Boinis, K. S. Diamanti, E. I. Panagopoulou, G. Gkotsis, N. Maragou, M.C. Nika, K. Vasilatos, K. A. Höpker, H. Schäfer, M. Wieczorek, R. Osteraurer, N. S. Thomaidis

This presentation is a collaboration between the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Athens and the Baden-Wuerttemberg State Institute for the Environment (LUBW). The authors of the presentation have investigated the levels of organic environmental contaminants in samples from carnivores of the terrestrial food chain collected from Germany. The results of this study showed exposure of terrestrial wildlife to a variety of anthropogenic chemicals (e.g. pharmaceuticals, plant protection products, PFAS). The results are important for the protection of human health and the environment.
